Have you ever dreamt about visiting Marrakesh in Morocco? A place with farmer’s markets filled with bold southwestern patterns, intriguing clay pottery and plenty of artisanal craftsmanship. In addition to the cultural fusions where original spice combinations are born and a variety of cuisines meet. If this all sounds like something you would like to experience but don’t want to go all the way to Africa, then go to Santa Fe in New Mexico.
Santa Fe has plenty to offer in all different facets, from cuisine to breathtaking landscapes. Some of these places I’ve visited myself but some of them I would definitely add to my list for next time!

Landmarks and markets
- Santa Fe Artists Market – The market is open seasonally, from March to December, on Saturdays from 9 AM to 2 PM. This is where you can find all the unique pieces made by local artists. Anything from jewelry to art and textiles, this market will not disappoint.
- Santa Fe Plaza – The main plaza in Santa Fe; which has to be on your list. Its a beautiful square with a park right in the middle, often filled with musicians and other activities. Surrounded by small local shops and landmarks, the perfect place to rewind and have a drink!
- The Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi – Speaking of history, this Cathedral has a lengthy history all the way back to when it was built in mid to late 1800s. Designed by the French born Archbishop Lamy, this building is a perfect example of the Romanesque Revival style.

Restaurants
- La Plazuela at La Fonda – Both the architecture and the food is worth coming for. La Plazuela, an elegant restaurant located on the hotel’s original patio built in the 1920’s. You can enjoy a creative, contemporary New Mexican or Southwestern meal while the restaurant is flushed with natural light. Read more here: https://lafondasantafe.com/dining-entertainment/
- Palace – When you walk into the restaurant you will encounter the great southwestern jazz interior. As if the Great Gatsby had gone southwest. Classic, inventive and modern American is what you can expect to eat here. With the local chef preparing meals with fresh ingredients from farms nearby which brings the whole dish together. - Coyote Cafe & Rooftop Cantina – Elegant but fun place, which offers a variety of exciting drinks and a southern inspired menu. This is a perfect place if you are downtown Santa Fe and you are looking to have lunch or dinner with a view overlooking the beautiful city. Do keep in mind that reservations are recommended but can’t be made for the rooftop. Might be a good idea to come there for late lunch or early dinner to get a spot on the rooftop! Art and Galleries
- Museum of International Folk Art (https://www.internationalfolkart.org/) – This museum has incredible history and a powerful message with the emphasis on bridging differences and creating a sense of fellowship among cultures. For Bartlett, the founder, traditional folk arts from around the world were a means of demonstrating a common bond.
- Windsor Betts Art Brokerage & Gallery – Great place to both admire and buy unique southwestern and native American art.
- New Mexico Museum of Art – Built in 1917 this was the first museum in the state of New Mexico dedicated to art. The museum has two locations and both are highly recommended. But you certainly don’t want to miss the one on the Plaza.

Hikes and Nature
- Sun Mountain Trailhead – A morning hike that gets your heart moving. It’s said to not be the hardest hike, but not a walk in the park either. This moderate hike brings you exercise as well as beautiful views of the mountains and Santa Fe.
- Winsor Trailhead – This is more of a day hike, rated as moderate it’s estimated to take roughly 4 hours. But this hike won’t disappoint with many beautiful overlooks, lake views and other stops throughout the trail.
- White Sands National Park – Though White Sands is located in the south part of New Mexico, a 4 hour drive from Santa Fe. I still believe its worth a visit if time allows. It feels like you are in Africa walking in the desert of Sahara.
